The Money Behind Your Blog

Ever thought about what you can do to increase your revenue streams? Maintaining a side hustle is a great way to make more money. But most people are put off by the prospect of working around the clock to achieve it, especially if it brings no fulfilment. If you blog for fun, perhaps now is the time to think about how you can make some money from it.

Make Money From Your Blog

Blogging entails a lot, and in many ways, it’s exactly like running a business. But whilst most bloggers are great creatives, it takes a bit more than that to turn it into a profitable activity. You need to make sure that you are thinking of it and treating it as a business.

In order to make money from blogging, you need to focus on the financial side of things first and foremost. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the things you can do.

Invest in software

One thing that can make things easier is to find some software which you can use for your accounting. If you want to make money from blogging, you need to focus on accounting for a blogging business as with any other, as it’s a major part of the process. As long as you have some decent software, you’ll find it easier to keep your money in check and to make sure that you are not overspending (let’s face it, we can all get carried away with purchasing props for photos, blog templates, coffees and the lot!)

Of course, you might need to shop around in order to find the best example, and you might also want to consider making use of cloud accounting software specifically to ensure that you keep all your data as safe as possible. Do that, and you will feel much more in charge of the money behind your blog.

Monetise In Multiple Ways

To ensure you’re keeping your blogging business afloat, you do need to monetise it: it’s best if you can find several ways in which you can do so. There are many options available to you here, and with some research, it hopefully shouldn’t find it too hard. You can use advertising revenue to generate some income, or you might want to think about selling products on your blog, whether they are ebooks you’ve written or merchandise you’ve created. As long as you monetise in many different ways, you should be able to keep the money afloat much more easily.

Separate your finances

Finally, remember that it’s hugely important to keep the money from your blog separate from your personal finances. Although it’s all your money, ultimately it’s the best practice legally and for tax purposes to account for it seperately.

I hope you’re feeling inspired. How have you kept money behind your blog?

I'm glad I've inspired you. It takes discipline though, which I think we are all trying to master!

I have accounting software for my blog and I do use it however all money just ends back into my personal account. Expenses also come out from it too so I can see why a seperate account would be beneficial. Hope you can find a new a path. I was doing copywriting a few years back and needed to get a second job to make ends meet. That job ended up becoming my priority instead of a backup and I haven't really gotten back into copywriting since. I've been contemplating getting back and relaunching myself but I am not sure if I want to go down that route again. Was thinking of doing article submissions instead to online sites. I'm all over the place right now hahaha.Sxxdaringcoco.com

Hi Sonia. I'm actually glad you posted this. Why not have a read of my "Dashed Dreams and Renewed Hope | How I Got into Copywriting" post. It might be insightful, then read "How to become a Freelancer". Submitting to publications I found is much easier than writing for business clients. It's less tiring and less emotionally draining. Good luck!

Stepping away from copywriting for clients was a very bold step Madeline! I remember reading your Instagram post about it and I was like "gasp! … what just happened?" Kudos to you on figuring out what is important to you and going ahead to do the needful. I have been following ProBlogger (www.problogger.com). They have some very useful tips for bloggers looking to monetize their content so you can check it out. To be honest, I too really have not been pitching brands as much as I should (some pitches have gone unanswered) and I keep wondering what it is I am missing. Please keep sharing your journey with us so we can perfect our craft. I am here if you ever need someone to bounce ideas off or to hold each other accountable in the bid to build a profitable blog! Cheers! – http://www.jamilakyari.com

Hi Jamila. Thank you so much for reading. I never realised you were following so closely. I'm flattered by your admiration however for a long time I saw it as a cop out! Hehe! I know problogger – I should probably refer to it a bit more. Please keep pitching! You're a talented blogger, not sure why brands wouldn't want to work with you! Thank you so much for extending your hand of support. I'll take you up on that! Email coming your way soon!
