Bookmarked! May Edition

Hi! It has been another busy month, with of course the flagship events being the Royal Wedding and my birthday! Today’s post is the last for the month of May, which means it is time for another edition of Bookmarked! where I bring to you some the quirkiest and heartwarming bookish and communications news.

This month’s edition features golden statues, a bit of black girl magic and women book warriors. Read a couple of the links and let me know which is your favourite!

A bit of a cocky move
I saw a few complaints about this rise from the writing community of Instagram but didn’t quite understand the implications. To best explain this story, imagine being banned from using a particular word for the rest of your life because someone else has trademarked that word? Well, this is what one author did, and now other authors are banned from using the word in their book titles. Find out the word in question here

Parents, guess who can teach your babies to talk?
As a former linguistics student, I am absolutely fascinated by these kinds of topics. Research conducted in Canada suggests that babies prefer to listen to other babies speak than adults. Read the details of the research here.

How to write a book
Cosmo magazine has gathered the best writing advice from already published authors. So, if you are thinking about penning your bestseller, you may want to read this article. Becoming the next bestselling author might not be as hard as you think!

Bringing #blackgirlmagic to advertising
Who says it’s a man’s world? New York based advertising agency 19th & Park is nothing like the cast of Mad Men because it is run by three women of colour. I love reading the success stories of entrepreneurs because more often than not it has taken a lot of hard work and a little bit of faith, and this one here is no different!  Also, if you are thinking of getting into advertising or communications you may want to read to the end because there is a little nugget of wisdom waiting for you!

Black Pantheress
The last time, I promised I would refrain from speaking about a certain much-talked much-hyped Marvel film that was released earlier this year. But a little birdie told me that a female-centric spinoff might be in the works! Read about it here.

Balancing the books

I think the writer of this article, AN Devers, and I are in the same ministry. She collects and preserves the memory of books by female authors and on madelinewilsonojo.com, I write book reviews mainly of books by female writers. Find out how AN Devers is doing the work she does in this here article.

The Fearless Girl
This job applicant took the phrase ‘dressed to impressed’ to the next level when she turned up to her interview at an advertising agency dressed as a certain gold statue. Jade Delaney’s brave act embodies everything her muse stands for. If you want to know whether she got the job or not, and who she was impersonating, you’ll just have to read the article!

So there you have it! May’s edition of Bookmarked! What has been your favourite feature? Let me know in the comments section.

The first article..hmm, is that even allowed? To answer my own question, apparently, it is! I guess it's restricted to just titles alone cos if it's for the use of the word ever in that genre, then, that's just crazy.

I know right? those were my first thoughts! I do think it's just the title though.
